Birth Story: Lila

Ladies and gentlemen, let’s welcome a wonderful blog post from my lovely wife, Jenny. I’m the one usually doing the posting at Solar Photographers, so it’s nice to have hers for a change…now, Jenny, on Lila’s birth.

I’ve been wanting to document a birth for quite some time. It’s actually a bucket list item for me… well, not anymore! A couple weeks ago, I headed to the hospital to document Lila’s birth story.

I feel so blessed to have been a part of this day. I’ve given birth three times, but it’s totally different to be on the other side. It was so amazing to watch Rosemary, with Jarot by her side, labor for hours and then deliver this beautiful, amazing new life! And the smiles on their other kids as they got to hold Lila for the first time. It was powerful.

Birth stories are by far the hardest to put into words. You witness so many JOYFUL moments in a short amount of time. There’s a certain FEELING floating in the air around the delivery room…one of those, you had to be there feelings. I’ll let the “mom approved” pictures tell the story better than my words ever could…

Note: I was uber nervous because mom happens to be an awesome wedding photographer herself.

On Christmas morning, Canaan was born. While mom was only in labor for a short (extremely short) time, and I missed the actual birth by 20 minutes, I saw many beautiful “firsts” in Canaan’s life. This is a glimpse into the first few hours of a beautiful baby boy’s life.

I’ve re-written this post a number of times. I have all these thoughts in my head, and I’m struggling to get them out. I’m going to try my best, though

I feel these images are powerful. They bring tears to my eyes. I’ve watched this slideshow numerous times already. I’ve cried every time.

Today, I had the wonderful opportunity to capture Sam’s birth. He stayed in just long enough so that I could make it (he almost came on Saturday while I was shooting a wedding). To me, there isn’t much more beautiful in life than the birth of a child. Waiting, mass chaos, TONS of pain (for the moms, not the dudes), but in the end, once you get to hold that beautiful baby in your arms, and snuggle them close to you, you realize, everything is alright. And life is beautiful.

Note: One of my biggest regrets (and I’m sure Jenny would agree) is not having a photographer with us during the deliveries of our children. We had 3 chances, and blew it every time. Yes, I have some pictures that I love from all 3, but we’re not together as a family in any of them. So, what I’m trying to say, is, think long and hard about having a photographer with you during the delivery of your baby. You might think it’s gross, or are not comfortable with it, but I’m telling you, one day, down the road, you will regret it.

Being a photographer is the most amazing job in the world. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else with my life. We get to freeze time when we press our shutter, capture moments that will never happen again, and bring joy to the lives of so many people. What I’m going to share with you all this evening was the coolest event I’ve ever gotten to photograph.

On Wednesday, April 23, Tasha was going to be induced and I was invited to capture the experience for them. This was going to be a new experience for me. I mean, I have kids of my own, and I was in the delivery room for both of them (and I didn’t pass out, whew:), but to be capturing the birth of another couple’s child was…let’s just say that I felt honored to be included. I could go on and on about how cool this was, but right now, I feel that my words are falling short of what I really feel about the birth experience, so please, enjoy the slideshow!
